Today was DD11's turn to check for eggs which they do three times a day, morning, noon and night. So after lunch she went out and here's what she found:
I don't know if it's "normal" to be so excited about such a little thing, but wow, what a feeling seeing that first egg! It was fairly clean and appears to have come from Miss Pearl (so named by DS9) since she had blood on her foot.
DD13 also informed me that you can tell the color eggs a chicken will lay by looking at their ears. Miss Pearl has white ears and the other two (Henny Penny and Shimmer) have brown ears.
We're quite proud of Miss Pearl. The egg is smaller than what you can buy in the store which we expected since we know that it takes a while before they lay regular size eggs... but it has a lovely shape and a very good shell.
Love it! The kids here were so excited too when they got their first eggs. Now when I go ask them to collect they're like, "Mooooooommmm, do I have to? It's :insert whatever the temp, time, mood or whatever they may say in there to keep from going out!" LOL I love your suburban homesteading adventure...oh and I probably will have a little garden, just have to figure out a way to keep a great dane, very agile german shepherd and a wiley beagle from getting in and digging things up! LOL
